Black Sands at Lake Wainamu

Since moving to Auckland the beach that I have visited the most is definitely Bethells.  The west coastline is so different from Dunedin or Bay of Plenty/Coromandel beaches.  So wild and dark with glittery sand.  Last weekend Emily, Jono and I visited the lake 4 kms inland from the beach.   We followed a path from the roadside along a stream then out and over the amazing black sand and rather moonlike dunes to Lake Wainamu.

Spotting a nice looking clearing on the other side of the lake that looked as though it would catch the last of the sun, we nestled into the incredibly spongy grass and drunk wine with the best view (thanks Jono).
Photo taking explorations are the best excuse for sunday adventuring.
Emily is an amazing photographer whose website is here.
